The Council Bluffs, Iowa, community is mourning the heartbreaking loss of Michael J. Mayer, 47, who passed away on July 30, 2026, while riding his Harley-Davidson motorcycle. His unexpected death has left his family, friends, coworkers, and countless others grieving the loss of a man remembered for his generosity, humor, devotion to family, and unmistakable love for life.

Born on June 6, 1979, Michael was a devoted husband, loving father, proud grandfather, and loyal friend. Family was at the center of his world, and he treasured the time he spent with the people he loved most. His granddaughter, Mia “Mimi” Rose, held a particularly special place in his heart, and the memories they created together will remain treasured by his family for generations to come.

Michael lived life with enthusiasm and a genuine appreciation for the things that brought him happiness. He had a deep passion for Harley-Davidson motorcycles, dirt track racing, fast cars, and bowling. In his younger years, he also enjoyed hunting and fishing. A proud graduate of Lewis Central High School in Council Bluffs, he participated in both wrestling and football during his school years.

His interests extended to the sports teams and personalities he followed closely. Michael was a devoted Dallas Cowboys and Nebraska Cornhuskers football fan, and he especially enjoyed watching his favorite dirt track driver, Kyle Berck. Through his membership in the Defiance Harley-Davidson HOG Chapter, he developed meaningful friendships with fellow motorcycle enthusiasts and shared countless memories with members of the riding community.

Michael also built a career centered around serving and helping others. Over the years, he worked for Genie Pest Control, Cox Communications, Bank of the West/BMO, and, most recently, United Concordia Dental (UCCI), where he served as a Customer Service Representative. His friendly personality, sense of humor, and willingness to go the extra mile made him appreciated by both coworkers and customers.

Those who knew Michael often describe him as someone who never met a stranger. He could strike up a conversation with almost anyone, whether the topic was motorcycles, racing, football, politics, or his beloved family. His openness and outgoing personality allowed him to form connections with people from many different walks of life.

Perhaps one of the greatest reflections of Michael’s character was his generosity toward others. He was always willing to help someone who needed a hand. Alongside his wife, Connie, he opened their home to countless children over the years, making sure there was always room for another person at the table. His hospitality, compassion, and willingness to care for others became an important part of the legacy he leaves behind.

Michael is lovingly remembered by his wife of more than 20½ years, Connie; his sons, Dominick, alongside Caitlyn Zuber, and Elijah Gilkerson; and his cherished granddaughter, Mia “Mimi” Rose. He is also survived by his parents, Vickie Snodgrass and Randy, and Richard Mayer Sr. and Kathy; his brothers, Jason and Laura, Jonathan, and Richard Mayer Jr. and Jessica Fisher; as well as numerous extended family members, bonus children, and lifelong friends.

He was preceded in death by his grandparents; his uncle, Mark Morrison; his parents-in-law, Carl and Janice Mumma; and his brother-in-law, Craig Mumma.

Family and friends will gather to honor Michael’s life during visitation and memorial services.

Visitation will be held Thursday, August 6, 2026, from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at Good Shepherd – L Street Chapel.

A memorial service will take place Friday, August 7, 2026, at 3:00 p.m. at Good Shepherd Funeral Home, 4712 S. 82nd Street, Omaha, Nebraska. A reception will follow in the Good Shepherd Reception Hall.

In keeping with Michael’s love of motorcycles and racing, those attending the services are encouraged to wear their favorite Harley-Davidson or racing shirt as a special tribute to the passions that brought him so much happiness.

Michael J. Mayer’s life was defined by unconditional love, generosity, laughter, friendship, and an unwavering devotion to the people he cared about. He leaves behind more than memories; he leaves behind the example of a man who welcomed others, helped those in need, loved his family deeply, and embraced life wholeheartedly.

Although Michael’s life ended far too soon, his influence will continue through his wife, children, granddaughter, family, friends, coworkers, and everyone fortunate enough to have crossed paths with him. The laughter he shared, the kindness he showed, and the memories he created will remain a lasting part of the lives he touched.

Michael J. Mayer will be deeply missed and forever remembered by all who knew and loved him.
